The Origins of Superior Small Lodging Association

Superior Small Lodging Association (SSL) was started in 1989 in Broward County when the county was going through a transition period, clamping down on the almost 400,000 college students who arrived every season for Spring Break.

New markets had to be identified to replace this business and it was agreed the small “Mom and Pop” hoteliers, who were deemed to be particularly vulnerable during this transition period needed help. Thus, The Superior Small Lodging Association was created, in an effort to assist the smaller operators, of properties 50 rooms and under, to but “heads in beds” at a more attractive rate. The key to success was that the local county would initiate a major marketing drive for the smaller properties that passed an annual quality inspection by a third party professional inspection company. The inspection process was based on criteria developed by the hoteliers and industry standards.

With the popularity of SSL members growing in Broward County, and the accompanying achievement of brand recognition by the association, Destination Marketing Offices (DMOs) in other counties began to take notice and SSL became a statewide organization with members in Pinellas, Lee, Brevard, St. James, Sarasota, Manatee, Collier, Indian River, Monroe, Palm Beach and Velusia counties in addition to the original chapter in Broward County (Greater Fort Lauderdale). A membership drive is currently underway to add chapters in additional counties.

Today the Superior Small Lodging Association represents a diverse group of small lodgings, hotels, inns, cottages, bed and breakfasts, condos and vacation homes that appeal to a myriad of vacation tastes. Whether travelers are looking for a relaxing time of the beach or sightseeing around the state guests have come to learn that no matter their ages, tastes or depths of their pockets there is an ideal SSL member property for them.
